The NCAA denied Florida State’s appeal of sanctions for football and 9 other sports with athletes involved in the cheating scandal, which involved an online music course. The only penalty of the sanctions Florida State attempted to appeal was the vacation of wins.
The football team vacated 5 wins from the 2006 season, including the Emerald Bowl, and 7 wins from the 2007 season. This action drops Bobby Bowden’s career win total from 389 to 377.
Florida State also vacated its 2007 NCAA Division I Championship in men’s track and field, along with 22 victories in men’s basketball from 2006-07 and 16 in women’s basketball from 2006-07, plus six more from 2007-08. Several wins and meet placings in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s track and field, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and men’s golf teams were also vacated.
The NCAA left it up to Florida State to determine which wins were to be vacated under the penalty handed down.
