What's going on this day behind the scenes in the NBA...
-Big news today is that the Hawks are looking for takers on Josh Smith. They resigned him last year despite heavy interest from Philly and Golden State in particular. Those in the Hawks organization think Smith's attitude might be bringing the team down a bit. Also, the Hawks are in a position where they want to resign steady vet Mike Bibby, who seems to have stepped up into the leadership role they've wanted him to take.
So where might Smith go?
Look for Detroit to make a push. Truth is, the Pistons are awash with cap room and probably need to make a splash this year before 2010. Carlos Boozer has interest, but he's a huge injury risk. Doesn't it say something when his old college coach wouldn't even bring him off the bench in the Olympics? Don't expect anything immediate as trading young players is a risk.
-Speaking of Detroit, they're still not satisfied with Sheed and AI coming off the books. They're looking to move their 15th pick to save themselves some salary room.
-Also, speaking of Detroit, rumors persist that Richard Hamilton might be on the block. Hamilton was vocally against the trade of Chauncey Billups that brought in Allen Iverson and the Pistons crumbled under the weight of no unity. With Hamilton and Prince as the lone starters remaining under contract from a team that went to an astonishing 6 straight conference finals, won two, and won one NBA title.
-Though it won't happen immediately, look for Rasheed Wallace to either retire, sign with the Pistons for the right amount of money that THEY decree, or sign with the Lakers. With Sheed, the question is motivation. What LA does with Lamar Odom will depend heavily on Sheed's desire to go there.
-BJ Mullens of Ohio State will be taken 16th by the Bulls if he's available.
-Ricky Rubio, ensconsed in a messy divorce from his Spanish team might fall further than #3 in the draft. If Memphis keeps the pick, he most assuredly will not go #2 unless a trade is already on the table. The Griz would like to avoid another Steve Francis situation.
-Look for aforementioned Memphis to move the 2nd pick. They've been in discussions with the Knicks, Kings, and others regarding the #2. They are leaning towards Hasheem Thabeet, who can be had at a lower price considering the Kings and Knicks are very high on Rubio.
More to come as I get it. If you want to know about a specific player or your specific team, hit me up, let me know, and I'll dig.
