Bobby Bowden and T.K. Wetherell share a moment in the locker room

Well, it's official. The Bowden Era is coming to a close. University President T.K. Wetherell's recent comments that he wants to retire soon were no surprise to this Nole. Wetherell and Bobby Bowden go way back. It's always been the two of them siding together over the years on countless issues related to the program. Now it looks like the two of them will ride off into retirement together. The fact that Bowden needs to call it quits before January 2011 or FSU will owe Jimbo Fisher $5 million because he hasn't become the head coach fits Wetherell's timeline perfectly since he mentioned hanging it up for good next year.
One thing really bothered me though. As a former player at FSU I expect Wetherell to exude some confidence in his program whether he's on the way out or not. He certainly showed no balls with the following statement, "I might die from envy of beating the Gators. Frustration of not being able to beat Tebow."
Time out T.K.! Who said this year's squad wasn't good enough to do just that? Calm down Gator fans. We all know what the final score was last year, and we all know this year's battle is in The Swamp. But stranger things have happened. The program is back on the rise in Tallahassee and there is a lot more speed all over the field this season. The gap is closing and this series has proven that expectations mean nothing when predicting the outcome of the yearly tussle.
All that aside, even if the gap wasn't closing, as the head of the school you don't show weakness like that. Maybe he forgot how brutal recruiting can be. You can be damn sure Charlie Strong, Urban Meyer and the rest of the Gator recruiting staff will put that bullet in the chamber when it comes time to take aim at recruits for '10. I'm sure Jimbo Fisher and Rick Trickett rolled their eyes when they heard that one. With all the off-field shenanigans recently, this is the last thing they needed.
So before you leave office T.K., WISE UP! Keep your mouth shut if you have negative thoughts about the Gators, the Hurricanes, or any other subject relating to the football team. Your ole pal Bobby would daggum appreciate it!
