Now, let me start by saying that there are SOME mids that
deserve to be ranked. They played a decent schedule, they beat some
decent teams, and they will do well in the bowls.
BUT, there has been a pervasive attitude by a lot of people that any
mid-major with 3 losses should be shoved right up into the top 25 with
everyone else. ECU, CMU, Troy, Navy, Fresno State.....all decent teams,
but seriously? Top 25? Now I know there can be an argument made on their behalf, but at the end of the day, bottom line, do you really
think that those teams could beat Rutgers, USC, Cal, Ole Miss,
Wisconsin, Clemson, Northwestern, Oklahoma, etc? Sure they could get
lucky and play above their heads for a game which has happened quite a
bit in the past 3 years. But on a regular basis, who do you think is
the better team? Because THAT is how we should be ranking teams! Not
this bullshit about "Well, C. Michigan only lost 2 games and won their
conference." Yeah? Well, so could a host of other teams you left out, and they probably would have done it with less losses with that schedule.
Seriously....I know everyone loves an underdog. And I know everyone
seems to love when the mighty have fallen. But let's get real here.
There is NO WAY some of these mids deserve to be ranked above some of
the teams getting left out. These are purely emotional picks, and I
hope that during bowl season, we get reminded YET AGAIN of why we have
to keep SOS as part of the ranking equation.
2008-2009 Bowl Season Majors -vs- Mids record 7-1
UConn(7-5) over Buffalo(8-5)
Utah(12-0) over Alabama(11-1)
Kentucky(6-6) over ECU(9-4)
Maryland(7-5) over Nevada(7-5)
Notre Dame(6-6) over Hawaii(7-5) {and ND's 6-6 is very misleading}
Arizona(7-5) over BYU(10-2)
USF(7-5) over Memphis(6-6)
Wake(7-5) over Navy(8-4)
Seriously? Have we forgotten this already? How about this?
2007-2008 Bowl Season Majors -vs- Mids record 6-2
Rutgers(7-5) over Ball State(7-5)
Georgia(10-2) over Hawaii(12-0)
Fresno State(8-4) over Ga Tech(7-5)
Cal(6-6) over Air Force(9-3)
Miss St(7-5) over UCF(10-3)
Purdue(7-5) over C. Mich(8-5)
BYU(10-2) over UCLA(6-6)
Cincy(9-3) over S. Miss(7-5)
2006-2007 Bowl Season Majors -vs- Mids record 5-3
Cincy(7-5) over West Mich.(8-4)
Boise(12-0) over Oklahoma(11-2)
Miami(6-6) over Nevada(8-4)
BC(9-3) oveer Navy(9-3)
South Carolina(7-5) over Houston(10-3)
Hawaii(10-3) over ASU(7-5)
South Florida(8-4) over ECU(7-5)
BYU(10-2) over Oregon(7-5)
So now, let's keep our eyes on these games and see how these supposed Mighty Mids to against the middle-of-the-pack majors.
Arkansas(7-5) -vs- ECU(9-4)
South Florida(7-5) -vs- Northern Illinois(7-5)
Missouri(8-4) -vs- Navy(8-4)
Cal(8-4) -vs- Utah(9-3)
Ore State(8-4) -vs- BYU(10-2)
Rutgers(8-4) -vs- UCF(8-4)
There seems to be less Majors -vs- Mids this year than in others.
That's a shame. Even I was hoping to see Boise or TCU play Florida and
Cincy. Maybe a few other matchups as well.
BUT, if history holds true, and the majors beat the mids yet again, will you guys finally
stop with this bullshit of stuffing as many mids in the top 25 as you
can just to feel good about yourself? Like you are some sort of
visionary or something....there is a REASON they are split into Majors
and Mids. It is because of the talent level between the two. If they
were the same, then we wouldn't even have to classify one group as 'mids'. They could all
be 'Majors'. Or just 'Div1A'. But they are not. So keep that in mind as
you compare C. Michigan or ECU's schedule to Mississippi, Northwestern,
or Arizona's, and try to justify putting the mid into your top 25.
And when we come after you about it after bowl season, try not to be so defensive. And don't say I didn't warn you....

We could argue the same thing about putting Big Ten teams in the top 25.
